Fit Nerds!

Well, I'm no stranger to weight loss. It was when I was younger (/coughighschoolcough) but I was on the wrestling team. I learned all the good (and bad) habits of weight loss. I know what it takes. That's why I just need to get going on it. If I do anything short than all of it, I'll slump and get lazy. I have to bullhead start the process, or I won't do it at all. No, I don't mean run a full marathon right off the bat, but I have to do all the steps in the process. My diet routine, although botched lately, is still ingrained in me. I'm back to my simplle breakfast, moderate lunch with vegetables included, and a hearty, but healthy dinner. I'm not a muscle builder, I'm focus'ing on the weight loss and some toning mixed in (purely because I have to).

If I don't do the calorie counting from NOW, I'll lose interest. Numbers rule my mind. I have to know, or I'll stop caring. If I do anything short of 100%, it'll be half-assing it and I'll be more likely to quit.

You sound like me. When I jump into something like weight loss or mass building, I have to do it fully and completely. It's only recently I have begun to slack a little on counting calories and stuff, but I just sleep better at night.
I'm glad we have something else in common!

For me, calorie counting won't work. I'll be getting lunch at work with no idea exactly what in what proportions is in the food, which throws off the entire day. But it's free, so I can't really justify not getting it! Thankfully they color-code the food based on how healthy it is--so I'll just have to steer towards the healthier things. My main problem right now is portion control, so what I've started to do is take less food than I think I need. If I'm still actually hungry when I've eaten that, then I can have more.

I've also started some bodyweight fitness stuff twice a week (the bf and I are doing that together) and I want to do yoga at least twice a week (Ashtanga, it's fun and it's great cardio--takes about an hour and a half). After I start working and get my wrists checked out by a doctor I'll join a gym (get a discount on the membership from work) and start weight training twice a week. So something like: M weights, T yoga, W Bodyweight, R Yoga, F Weights, S/U Bodyweight is my plan. One step at a time :)

I'm on fitocracy as rhiaaryx--I like it for logging and tracking workouts, though it doesn't figure calories so it may not fit with loseit.

I don't have a scale, but I'd put myself at about 135-140 right now. I'm a bit pudgy and am healthiest at about 115 when fit. I'm 5'1", so 115 isn't teeny tiny :)

... I just opened the emotes to see if there was a relevant one and found this instead: :bounceboobies:

If I don't do a calorie count, I over eat. That's my style. I eat until full, and then some. With calorie counting, I can get a better idea of what I'm actually eating. Setting a limit lets me control better than just "yeah, I'll eat until I'm full". I can't do that. That whole will power thing and overeating doesn't exist. Never has. That's where the counting comes in. Putting things in numeric form rather than abstract guessing, I can actually visualize and see what I'm doing. Makes a huge difference for someone with a mind like mine.

Might I make a suggestion?

Invest in yourself. Get a personal trainer. You want SERIOUS results and the feeling that you HAVE to be at the gym? Pay for it. No one likes to waste money. And Oh no you spent 1000 dollars over 2 months! Well guess what in 2 months they could have you are 200 lbs... This is why I always recommend this path. They tell you what to do, they push you to your limit, and they take the guesswork out of a very hard "Beginning" and then once you feel better, look better, you want to push yourself, your BRAIn literally changes direction and motivates itself.

You got 2-3-4 years at 235 lbs and bam 2-3-4 months and you are what you wanted to be. I say that is worth it.

Just my two cents.

I'm with Tristan on this one. I caution you, though. Some PTs are total idiots or, as we like to call them "broz" who will have you doing stupid shit on a bosu ball rather than just lifting with basic moves that build strength and muscle.
Also, a gym membership is awesome for access to a treadmill, spin classes, yoga, sauna, whatever. So, Rhia, I think your appraoch is an awesome one! I have been doing some bodyweight stuff, too, very basic shit like pushups kick my ass.
Bruce, do what works. I have to count as well. Over the years, I have realized that I am a stress eater. I find comfort in shoving food down my throat. Over the last year, though, I have become much more conscious in the food choices I make and am very well on my way to nearly all paleo-ish. I want to do paleo, but still have oatmeal and some grains that are not overly processed.
After a while, you'll stop craving certain things, if for no other reason than the fact that those things literally make you feel gross.
I can enjoy cookies in the moment, but what comes after is often not pretty!
I'm -stellarb on fitocracy if you want to find me. I'll follow you, Rhia! This is so exciting!

AND YES you MUST research a trainer and look at yelp reviews prior. Good trainers will have good reviews because their clients when they are asked will HAPPILY put one up. A good trainer would have you doing a lot of plyo/cardio work in the beginning with very little straight weight lifting. They would build you core up and make sure you don't leave EVER without being soaked. (in the beginning that is)

I am not on Fitocracy, but I definitely want to join the 'mutual support train'... Choo Choo! :) I do have a gym membership to Shapes, as I prefer to work out with just women... I'm just more comfortable in that environment... and I have been good about going 3-5 times a week.

Getting my portion sizes and late night snacking under control is the hardest thing for me. This week when I went grocery shopping I stuck mostly to the produce section, which I was proud of... but it was costly. About $80 compared to my typical $35-$40 a week. I am a couponer, but there are rarely coupons for produce / meats. So, I am gonna start shopping around, check out local farmers markets and see if I can get some better pricing.

There is a community gardening program where you can grow your own veggies but I have a purple thumb. Plus, being lazy like Gyoin (hehe) I doubt I would have the patience, nor make the time, to cultivate my own garden.

I am excited though that we can share our goals and successes here. I have tried a PT through my gym, but like you said Kaspyn, I didn't feel very confident in their knowledge or abilities. That is really important for safety purposes, but also mentally, to feel like you are working with someone who really knows YOU and what would be best for you.

I don't like trainers. I played so many sports with coaches where, yes, their pushing was good for a lazy person. But I also am short tempered when it comes to being pushed. Not in the sense of retaliation, but in the sense of anxiety. I wouldn't go back if I had a personal trainer. I wouldn't want to see that person. I'd be angry and anxious and sick to my stomach about it. That's unhealthy. Doing this will have to be at my speed with my own goals. Not anyone else's agenda or ideas. I know what I need to do, a trainer may make it faster, but that's not my goal.

Gym PT's often times if not in a high end gym are REALLY bad. That is why they work for a gym and not their own.

That being said you have the right to tell a PT you don't want them and find a new one.

The best thing my PT ever said to me was:

Tristan, "Uhm I don't think I am doing this right *dripping sweat ready to puke* my leg hurts here! I think I am hurting myself!"

Trainer, "*turns to girl behind me doing same workout* Hey, when you do this workout where does it hurt?"

She points to the exact area I was talking about...

Trainer, "and when you first started where did it hurt?"

Points to the exact area where I am feeling the *i think Im hurting myself pain*.

Trainer, "*just smiles* Ok ten more."

Waits a moment: Trainer, "Your muscles have a period of adjustment, you don't have muscle there so it hurts more, but you will build it and it will overcome the strain."

GREAT TRAINER. Motivates, provides proof, informs.

Kizzie if we lived closer, I'd work your ass out 4-5 days a week! It would be so wonderful! :)

Yes, look around for good options for food. I like to think of this way, though:

Eating junk breaks your body down, which means you have to go to the doctor (eventually, for any number of ailments) then, because in America we don't really believe in preventative care, the doctor will tell you to "rest" and take these pills for x amount of days or weeks or years, further perpetuating the problem and also costs a lot of fucking money (the pharmaceutical industry in America is a billion dollar industry yearly).

So, spend the extra 50 bucks on food and not on pills and doctors visits and co-pays.

That's just my point of view, though. My GF tries to tell me to buy the cheaper meat and I tell her, "over my dead body" being slightly serious.

Gyoin love the gumption just make sure not to get sucked into the Wallet Dieter. I.E. Ooo I bought this new app, this new workout DvD, this set of dumbbells, this weird food thing that I will never eat, this awesome calorie counting spoon, and a new panda bear that tickles me while I do pushups. Because those people end up losing nothing, gaining no motivation, and never being tickled by their cute panda cause they never actually do the pushup. An app doesn't get your ass in the gym.

Eating not eating, you get out what you put in WORK wise is what it really comes down to.

Plus you are a man with testosterone so welcome to the fast track haha.

Where do you live again Kas? Maybe it's worth a move! LOL

Excellent, excellent point! I much rather spend the money at the grocery than at the doctor. +1

Argg my mother has these amazing family recipes and she buys the worst ingredients for them sometimes. I am like WHYYY YOU RUIN FOOD!!!

OMG I just had the most hilarious idea! How about at the next meet up (or maybe plan a special one) we do it AltTabMe biggest loser style! Tristan/Kaspyn and anyone else with the cred can be "Jillian" and "Bob", and the rest of us can be the red team/blue team fighting for our health and bragging rights!

Tristan can film it... it can be Nerd Nutrition 101, 8-Bit Boot Camp, RAWR-robics... you get the idea. :p

Jesus, I watched this fucking documentary called "Farmageddon" and I so disgusted, I nearly became a vegetarian. I can no longer enjoy chinese food, fast food (haven't done that in years anyway) or even a fucking sandwhich from Panera now because of this new insight and elightenment. However, at least now I know...

Kizzie, I live in good ol' Kansas. Do yourself a favor and never move here!

Tristan...my GF is a vegetarian so she doesn't really get it, but i like my meat and that's just the way it is!

I want to do be Jillian! I am totally like that, too. I would yell at you and make you cry. You don't want that.....do you?

LOL, consider it done. Kansas, thanks to the Wizard of Oz, is a place that I have never desired to visit. Shame though, I am sure you'd be a kick ass trainer / motivator!

I really want to get my PT cert, but it's like...people are so lazy and they really try hard to blame everyone and everything else but themselves...I don't have the patience for people's BS and excuses.
