What's new

Fit Nerds!

Jesus, I watched this fucking documentary called "Farmageddon" and I so disgusted, I nearly became a vegetarian. I can no longer enjoy chinese food, fast food (haven't done that in years anyway) or even a fucking sandwhich from Panera now because of this new insight and elightenment. However, at least now I know...

Kizzie, I live in good ol' Kansas. Do yourself a favor and never move here!

Tristan...my GF is a vegetarian so she doesn't really get it, but i like my meat and that's just the way it is!

Whats wrong with Panera? And stop talking about loving meat, I'm all hot and bothered.!

Nothing, Panera is rad, I just can only have their vegetarian shit now, which is annoying. Because their potato soup is fucking BALLA! Makes me sad. It also makes me leaner. It's a lose-win, haha.
Tristan....

i love meat!!!! gimme more meat!!! yummy, meat!

Wow Kaspyn, you are doing some serious weight training. Well compared to me at any rate. I'm a novice.
Here is what I am doing at my gym currently, 2-3 times a week strength training:

Abdominal Machine - 30lbs, 15 rep x 2
Back Extension - 30lbs, 15 rep x 2
Pectoral Fly - 15lbs (I'm a wuss on upper body strength), 15 rep x 2
Leg Press - 70lbs, 15 rep x 2
Hip Abduction - 30 lbs, 15 rep x 2
Hip Adduction - 30 lbs, 15 rep x 2
Shoulder Press - 5lbs (don't hate...lol), 15 rep x 2
Leg Extension - 10lbs (bad knees I am trying to strengthen), 15 rep x 2
Bicep Curl - 10lbs, 15 rep x 2
Triceps - 10lbs, 15 rep x 2

I feel like I could increase weight on my bicep curls, but everything else right now feels ok.

I also try to do cardio 3-5 times a week and it varies up, I either do Zumba, AWT (Aerobic weight training), Swimming, Treadmill, etc.
Depends on my mood. It feels good, and I have never been one that enjoyed working out, so I think my mindset is finally in the right place to succeed this year.

2 things, please stop using the leg press and leg extension machines. They wreck your knees.
Otherwise, no hate from me. I am quite proud of you for getting moving and trying your best! Excellent work!

I have some lofty goals this year...

Trying to get my deadlift to 305 (hence the rack pulls, helps with pulling strength and hand strength) and would like to overhead press 66% of my bodyweight (currently weigh around 164) which would be about 110 pounds.

And I would love to do chins/pull ups for reps again!

Any recommendations then on how to build knee strength? I just don't want to feel pain when squatting or climbing stairs. I know a lot of it is weight/age related, but I can work on one of those things :). Actually the girl at the gym, whom I told about my knee issues, recommended both of those machines to me for strengthening. This is why I don't really have a lot of confidence in the PTs there.

rofl, wow....

Knee strength will come on its own as you work other muscles (you body) in general. If they hurt, just work around them. But the leg press and leg extension/curl only put undue pressure on the knee and the joints around it, especially the tendons. If you want to strengthen your knees, do body squats against a wall things like that. Air squats are great, do them slowly, even goblet squats, stuff like that will help.

A lot of times one thing hurts when something else is out of whack. I have a bad back, degenerative disc disease and bulging dicsc, but i know that not moving is worse than moving, so I still do deadlifts and squats because I know my limits and how the things work together...and a lot of my pain is tight hips and pelvic cage, so I do a lot of mobility work and traction at home.

Do bodyweight squats. you can use bands, too. STRETCH like it's going out of style. I can get you links to good stretching routines if you're interested. Also, invest in a foam roller. It will do wonders for you (and hurt like hell).

I am definitely interested in anything that might help. Feel free to post links here, so others can check them out too, or you can IM me on the forums. Thanks Kas for all your advice and support!

My wife and I have started going the YMCA on a semi-twice-weekly basis again. I enjoy running on the treadmill while watching my iPad. I tried running outside, but gave up when I kept hitting trees.

As a bit of inspiration, here's my roommate's weight-loss graph:

She joined weight watchers (actually with the subscription) and almost religiously tracked points on an android app. She also joined a gym (discounted by her work) and hired personal trainers. She saw them 2-3 times a week, sometimes 4. She only weighed herself at the WW meetings on the weekends.

She started at 287 and is 5'10".

Jeez. I'm starting 50 pounds lighter and aiming for 20 pounds heavier. I feel very lazy in comparison.

It is so awesome seeing stuff like that!
I am doing some barbell floor presses, goblet squats, pull ups and pendlay rows today. What are you guys doing?
