What's new

Fit Nerds!

I'm was in the same boat. 356 pounds, lazy fat mess, who loved to eat and drink. I spent the last 7 years studying nutrition, fitness, health, and food. I'm now 190 pounds, a recreational drunk, and a professional chef. I've found inspiration in running 5ks and adventure runs, and fallen in love with crossfit. And while my pictures aren't as sexy as Tristan's they tell the story well.

Before 356lbs - Not the best pictures....I wasn't really a camera whore at almost 400 pounds. :p

I wont lie, loseing 166 pounds didnt leave me with the sexiest body in the world, but I cant tell you how good it feels to run 8 miles in the mud and rain knowing that just a few years ago I couldn't even take the stairs! So I couldn't give a flying fuck how I look in the mirror. Pardon my french. :p

Slow and steady wins the race. Just work on simple things like drinking more water, working out 3 or 4 times a week and eating vegetables with dinner each night and stuff like that. Then, as you progress with the smaller things, start taking away other things that you ultimately want to get rid of in your diet/life. I still eat bread. I still drink beer. But I also workout about 5 days a week now and get a lot of sleep (until school starts up again) but it took starting with simple things at first and I only drink once in a blue moon now and have bread maybe 3 times a week or so. Just depends on my activity level that day, really.

Tristan is right about not having to count, once you get the hang of it. But generally, the less processed stuff has overall fewer "empty" calories (someone mentioned that) so once you cut that crap out, you can really start to just feel it.

Once you're more thirsty than hungry while eating, you're probably at a good stopping point.

Edit: Damn, Claark! Excellent progress you've made!

Just wait till the peeing starts!

OMG working out makes you piss your brains out! Mostly cause you drink more water =P

You can eat Bread and drink beer. It is all about moderation. Don't starve your body from the foods it loves or you will end up fall back into old ways.

It is the WORK you put into your body that helps it, not the calories you count.

This obsession with counting calories is really not the way to meet goals, unless you are going for a world record or want to look like Arnold, which in that case count UP not down.

You KNOW when you eat too much and you KNOW when you eat the right portions.

And mix in a workout and BLAM.

I know it isn't as easy as that is written out, TRUST ME I KNOW. But it really does boil down to that simple of a philosophy.
Oh, I know. I'm not obsessing over calories, but logging them with LoseIt really helps me with understanding what's truly in a particular portion size. (i.e. - what does a "serving" look like from a box of something). I'll still drink a few beers and have some bread, but not nearly as much as before. :) But yeah, ultimately it's about portioning and getting active.

edit: Oh! And yeah... I'm drinking so much water now, peeing alllll the time. >_<

I count calories because I carb/calorie cycle. It works out for me, and it's definitely one way I hold myself accountable. So I feel you, Nahku.

Holy shiiiiit Claark!! I'm on the same boat except I'm only just getting on!! hopefuly I'll make it the whole way. Great inspiration dude!

I am pretty excited. You guys inspired me! Today when I went to the gym I saw they were doing a 'weight loss challenge' where members sign up (Biggest Loser Style) and have until March 28th to show the greatest improvement. The winner will get a total makeover... and I WANT IT!
So, I've never liked participating in challenges like that before because I usually feel defeated before I even start... but it's a new year, so what the hell.
Wish me luck :).

BTW Claark, AMAZING ACHIEVEMENT! WTG!

Figured I'd post here too.

I don't have any crazy stories like some of you guys but I'm still cheering for those who want to get fit!

I myself want to lose like another ten pounds. I've lost like 40 since the start of August so its all good.

But yeah. Go Arcanix Go!

If anyone cares. Fitocracy is pretty rad for tracking workouts and finding groups to chat with.

Also...jeez, Roasty! that is amazing! congrats on your success!

This is awesome to see all this progress! My story isn't as amazing, but I thought I'd share. Hopefully this will be a fairly condensed version, sometimes I tend to get carried away with talking/typing, so here goes.

I met my husband 12 years ago and I weighed 135 lbs, basically fresh out of high school where I had been in marching band for 4 years, so quite in shape. Too bad I don't have pictures, I never liked being on camera. Anyway, met my husband and joined him on is truck for about a year, he was a Semi truck driver. I gained 20 lbs and also became pregnant after that year in which I gained an additional 46 lbs! So i was 201 the day I gave birth to my first son, I only know this because I had a checkup with the dr that morning. I ended up at 175 after all was said and done which was also my pre-pegnancy weight with my second son about a year later. With him I initially lost 11 lbs in the first 3 months, very, very bad morning sickness with that one! I gained about 20 lbs or so after that though. After having him I was down 11 lbs from my pre-pregnancy weight, so sitting at 164 lbs.

So life went on, I never cared what I ate, drank soda ALL the time. If I needed a drink, it was soda, when I ate, another soda. I drank 6 a day on average. I slowly gained weight, never really caring, I just said to myself I never wanted to hit 200 since the only time I was that heavy was with a kid in my belly. Fast forward about 8 years later I had finally hit 200lbs, I was determined NOT to go any farther so I decided to start riding my bike, we have great paved trails close to our house that go on for miles. I rode my bike for an entire Summer from April to September I was up to riding 10 miles a day, rarely skipping days. I lost 10 lbs initially, but plateaued. I was still drinking soda and eating what I wanted, so just riding my bike wasn't working anymore than to keep the weight steady. Never rode again after that summer, my husband got too sick for me to be away from home too long. Being on a bike I couldn't get home very fast if I went as far out as I usually did.

Fast forward about another year later I was doing things like going to Gorden Food Service, which is a restaurant supply store where they have giant boxes and jars and cans of everything a restaurant would want. I'd buy those big ass boxes of candy, first it was york peppermint patties and I'd eat the whole box in a week. The next I remember buying a big box of cow tails and said to myself 'oh yeah, I'll make sure and let the kids have most of these!' Yeah right.....I ate the whole box that week, and still nabbed another box and did it again... I ended up at 215 lbs! Finally I said enough is enough, I've got to figure out what to do here! I cut down my soda first off, never had more than 3 a day if I was thirsty I'd drink milk or lemonade and soon it was only cranberry juice, I realized how much I loved the stuff. The hardest part was I HAD to have a soda with my meals, that's where the 3 a day came in. I at least managed to maintain my weight, never went above 215. It wasn't enough for me just to maintain, I didn't like how I looked or how I felt.

While my husband was in this hospital that, had we known how horrible the place was, he wouldn't have gone there, but had he not gone there I don't think I'd have had this success story to tell! I visited a gas station for some drinks one day, I happened to notice these Special K drinks, it said something about curbing hunger for 4 hours. So I decided to try one out, it was a French Vanilla Special K Protein Shake. It was quite tastey! So, the rest of this story short, I made my own diet of drinking these protein shakes for the most part if I'm hungry, drinking cranberry juice if I'm thirsty and I do still have about half a 12oz can of soda a day with something good and healthy to eat! I still eat candy now and then, and other things I used to eat but in much moderation.

Since August of last year, I've officially lost 32lbs! And that's with no working out what so ever, with traveling to and from the hospital and spending most of my days there I never had the time... ever. I was either at the hospital or at home sleeping so I did what I could do and that was change what I put in my body. So my clothes are fitting much more loosely now a days, hopefully I'll be able to start working out since I'm home more. That will boost my weight loss even more, or help build muscle, which would be best.

Dang, I knew it was gonna get long, but that's my weight story in a nutshell, kind of a big nutshell, but there you have it =P

I just saw a sign for the church across the street that said it was starting fitness classes this month, I'm tempted to check it out since it's so close to my house. If it were summer I definitely would be out riding while my husband is still in the hospital. Anyway, thanks for reading, I'm open to suggestions!

Oh, and if anyone wants more insight on the shakes let me know, they work great for hunger control!

Well, the holidays are over. I'm at my fattest. Caroline and I have been working hard on diets prior to the holiday season, but after all the candy, cakes, exquisite meals that an Italian family forces down your throats, we (mostly I) have fallen into old habits of eating crap all the time. May pants barely fit (36" waste on a 5'10" Male is tight... gross) and my man boobies are bouncy. It's time.

I would like to pose a challenge to everyone here. When I get home today, I will be weighing myself and posting a picture of my current physique. Hopefully this will encourage myself to actually get off my fat ass. Maybe. I am still quite a lazy person even when pushed to embarrassment. If anything, I actually just get angry when pushed (ask Caroline, I tend to snap easily, then sulk in shame afterwards).

So here is my challenge. I don't necessarily want a competition, because I only set those up when I know I am going to win. Yes, I can be that selfish. What I am offering you guys is a mutual effort. I hate getting healthy. I want my beer. I want my wings. In fact, even when typing this up, I still have plans to eat hot wings today. I'm not the type of person that can ignore my guilty urges when it comes to food. BUT, I do want to do something.

I'm a little hesitant on doing this, but I am most likely going to sign up for a planet fitness membership. There is one a mile down the road from me. Very easy to get to. I could simply go right after work, do a 45 minute work out, and go home and shower like I do anyways. This may help my recent sleeping issues and general discomfort.

TLDR; I'm fat. I eat a lot.I sit in a chair all day. I need to work out. Not asking for advice or help, just getting my thoughts on paper so that I don't take back my words so easily.

Needing to buy XL shirts and 38 inch waste solidified my decision.

Bonus's to Planet Fitness.
- The time that I'd go, not many people would be there
- Free Massage chair use with the membership I'd get
- I can bring Caroline
- I wouldn't be the only fat person.
- Super close
- I wouldn't have to shower even more than I do, because I'd work out right after work and before my fish shower.
- I'd primarily use cardio machines everytime I go, and mix in some strength training depending on the day.

I think the worst thing I'd have to endure is my time lost in the day. My days feel so short as it is. I think that's my primary reason for not wanting to do it, it'd take away from my time doing the things I love (games and Caroline mostly). I'd really have to get some good shows to watch on my phone or something to keep my mind off of working out. I can't just blindly work-out. I need some mental stimulation or something to keep me going. Once it becomes routine, I know it'll be easier. But god damn, making it routine will be the hardest thing ever.

Routines. This is probably the part that I'd have the most trouble. What is most effective? What can my body actually handle? If I go too fast too early, I'll never want to go back. If I don't go hard enough, I'll be wasting my time.

Reading articles state that for a healthy, pound a week loss is to create a calorie deficit of 3500 in a week. That means...
If I eat 2,000 Carolies a day (consumption of 14,000 a week), I would need to burn 17,500 Caroliries a week. That's a lot if you look at calorie burn charts. Sure, I could adjust this by eating less. Let's estimate 1,500 calories a day. 10,500 A week. I'd still need to burn 14,000 Carolies a week to follow the "desired" pound a week plan. But that would also mean I eat a lot less, and for a guy like me, that's not easy. Portion control is a skill I haven't acquired. Caroline does her best ot curb my cravings, but sometimes I can't do it. I get angry. Seriously angry. I refuse to listen to reason, and I eat whatever I'm craving, be it that pint of ice, cookies, candy, etc. I don't feel right without indulging those cravings. It's terrible...

So, that's where I'm at. I guess I should start following a calorie counting app of some sort. If I follow the diet plans of Almighty Caroline, my intake will decrease. I have been eating salads, drinking water instead of soda and beer, and watering down my juices, eating lesser amounts of meats while increasing my greens.... I can do it, I just wish I could still eat whatever I wanted and retain a somewhat mildly healthy body.

Coo! Started at 233.4, goal of 180. If I can go lower, even better. :) Be sure to get the smartphone app. It lets you scan barcodes for even easier logging of food.

Yeah, just did haha. Set it up with my account. I was hoping a diet alone would be enough, but I fell off that wagon too easily and the results have shown. I gotta do something else. I've put it off for years. Hopefully I can get that starting push that'll make things easier.

If others would like to join for their progress, or follow my own, add me. Bruce Casassa ([email protected]). Maybe it will encourage us to stay healthy together, or at least shame ourselves by seeing how well others are doing so we'll do the same.

Edit: Wow. They even have restaurant items included. You can really pinpoint what you ate and not cheat the point system. This way I can still stay in the "calorie limit" and not feel too guilty about going out and eating what I actually want to eat (with portion control....)

Hi Bruce,
May I suggest just one thing at a time for now? Just get to the gym 5 days this week. That's it. When you're there, do something that involves moving around a lot.
Then, next week, start tracking. Because it generally takes about 2 weeks to create a new habit, but breaking the old ones and the old thought patterns will be harder and take longer.
Eating meat is awesome and eating veggies is more awesome. I usually eat 2 meals a day. I skip breakfast, workout, then eat my post workout meal, play games or whatever, then eat before bed. Have been doing this for about 2 years now and it helps with feeling full longer, especially when trying to cut weight and fat down.
Protein from meat will fill you up, and green veggies also help that. So you're on the right track!
Also, I eat chicken wings all the time and am getting muthafuckinjacked now, so eat it up!
Also, you may think of joining Fitocracy and finding me on there, and there are groups on there as well you can join for a bit of extra support.
As far as a routine goes, what are your limitations, disabilities, injuries, etc? Probably a very basic routine with machines is your best bet for now, because using the barbell incorrectly can hurt and coaching is expensive.
