Alright so this is a topic that I've debated with friends in the past and that I'm a strong supporter of one way and not the other but before I start this thread with my opinion I want to hear what everyone else has to say.

"Open-World PVP" What does it mean to you? Please be specific because I will be replying to other's opinions and pushing my opinion if they don't match :p Back up your reasoning too! I like a nice (But friendly!) debate. Because I'm a Poll whore I'm gonna make a poll as well but will not vote yet. (Also give examples like, well like shown in game X, I think this is Open-World. Also if you consider multiple styles as open-world, put um all in!)

Edit: Faction... not fraction... unless you hate math, then you can fight fractions too :p
Mod edit: fixed your typo cause it bothered me.

To me pvp means I dont have to do anything. I dont have to go somewhere specific, flag myself, queue, or anything. I like when there is objectives but I hate any kind of 'reward' system for open world pvp. That is the reward. Lets hope this happens in wildstar

I personally think all the points covered what it is. I loved the way Warhammer did it though, with RvR stuff. You can go into a region that is in between the leveling stages and you got yourself keeps, objectives, and other doodads that will keep the flow of fighting moving around

Its a few of those things put together to me. Its the randomness of encounters out in the world, the possible effects of attacking someone out there that you might run into again as you level, and the ability to have large scale, strategic battles in large places.

The poll is left open to multiple selections.

Open world PvP is so much fun there is nothing like starting a guild war out in a random place all because someone ganked you. (or you ganked them *shifty eyes*). Also that feeling of oh crap i got jumped! then you turn the fight on its head and kill them is so satisfying. Dont get me wrong i really like structured PvP but the feeling of i could get ganked at anytime while questing just gives games more flavour in my opinion. The unexpected and i can kill people when i want kind of power is what open world PvP means to me.

Alright, so seeing as many of you have come from GW2 - Would anyone here consider what GW2 did as open-world PVP? Why or Why not?

Guild wars 2 was a let down in every way, Pve and PvP. But on about the server vs server it was rubbish it was just zerging all the time = win. also they was no was i could just go oh look a guy over there lets kill him while doing quests. the only good PvP in guild wars was the structured and that got dry and pointless really quickly.

Yeah it was no organization and such a letdown. I had been looking forward to some serious stategic stuff in WvWvW.

I wish there were no 'safe' zones; I'd love to see the other faction stage a massive raid on one of the main cities. That would be my jam.

"Safe" is a relative term, I still recall times in WoW when we would roll over and just hold crossroads all day. A town with Guards and technically "safe".
Well I meant more like areas where PvP is either strictly prohibited or you can choose to remain unflagged without fear of being jumped.

Achaea is like this. Only there's no factions per se, but 6 city states that are usually perpetually at war with one another, because they represent the different dungeons and dragons alignments (lawful evil- mhaldor, true neutral- hashan, chaotic good- eleusis, lawful good- shallam, neutral good- cyrene, and chaotic neutral- ashtan) so you can see that some cities formed alliances but because they are different, usually the alliances don't last long. It was always fun raiding shallam for hours though... even if it was all text.

I actually just made a character on a new private UO server yesterday. I still enjoy playing that game haha. The sounds just bring me back. So many things have been added to that game though that you can literally get lost in patch notes for a month.

IMO Open World PvP is where you can travel anywhere in the game world and be killed by any enemy player. Anywhere from a lvl 1-10 start zone to a major city or even a main road intersection, on land, in water or even in the air. To me that would be a true Open World PvP game.

To me open world pvp is where you can attack or be attacked by the other faction(s). It could be game wide, or in certain zones. PvE servers where you get to choose if others can attack you or not is the opposite of open world pvp to me.

To be open world PvP is death anywhere, trapped boxes blowing you up, thieves stealing your stuff in town, nevermind.... I don't know why I like abuse...

All this plus setting up camp in another guilds guildhall and kklling everyone inside, then stealing all their crystals off their master crystal and making a wormhole inside their guildhall to outside your city to stage a full on invasion while you sail off to an island to have a portrait of yourself made to hang in their master crystal room that takes 6 rl months to decay and can't be taken down or destroyed.... man I wish Achaea had graphics.
