Bru's PC woes.

So... I went out and bought myself a FX-8320 Black Edition on sale at micro center. Pretty good deal.

Had:
FX-4100
MA597 Mobo
Corsair H50 or 55 cooling (not sure which)
Cooler Master Silencio 550 case.

So I removed the cooler, took out the old chip, put the new one in, applied thermal paste (dot in center), and re-installed cooler (a bitch to do btw). Things looked pretty good (I ran the ASUS auto-clock in BIOS) and PC was flying. Was playing Civ5 and PC auto shuts down.... SHIT.

I check the temp and its at 80C.... BALLS.

I reapplied thermal past but still ran warm. I disabled the asus auto-clock and ran Prime95 for about 15-20min and cpu temp was mid/high 60s C at load...

Is the asus auto-clock absolute crap? Maybe I shouldn't OC at all.

I'm wondering if it's the Corsair H50-whatever isn't ideal for my case (I noticed the fan is installed as an outflow rather than intake, maybe I should invert that? (My friend built this for me like 2 years ago...)

Considering replacing the H50 with Coolermaster EVO 212 and a standard 120mm fan at the back as outflow.

Basically, I'm on Struggle Street in Amateur City. HALP PLZ IF POSSIBLE.

Gonna go home tonight and test some more without overclock and see what the temps do.

I'm decent with computers and I am still iffy about OCing just because if it breaks i'm out that money and if youre like me you don't have money to burn. Could be that the cpu fan isn't doing it's job. It's been very rare where I found case fans to hurt/help cooling to point that i mattered. I figure as long as I have at least one intake and one exhaust i'm gtg.

My advice would be don't overclock and if it is still over heating look into a better fan.

to he honest i have heard bad things about the H50 and when you compare it to a decent air cooling tower it doesn't even do better. if i were you i would stick to air cooling unless your going to get a better water cooling system as the H50 has too small of a radiator to do much good. additionally the H50 fan should have been an intake. you could try switching the radiator to intake and that should help but in the end the evo 212 you mentioned is a much better cooler, so i would recommend just using that.

Re-applied thermal paste and tweaked my case a bit last night, temps looked better but still not great. I think you're right about the H50; the 212 Evo should come in tomorrow though, hopefully that makes a difference!

that Evo 212 is an amazing cooler for the money been considering changing my Antec Khuler Flow with one of those... or even if the money wasn't an issue a Noctua Nh-d14 wich is THE cooler, and my case can handle it. (its huge) but I digress.

The H50 is known to have some pump issues here and there... did you OC your last cpu? did it always perform well? (the H50)
what else did you change? did you make ABSOLUTELY SURE it was seated correctly and well fastened? do NOT go overboard with the thermal compound less is more here... did you run it without OC at all? how were your temps? all these matters... and there is no foolproof way of fixing it... just trial and error.

now if when you place your new Evo 212 and everything works fine we could safely asume it was the H50 pump ....

thats all that comes to mind... Good luck and don't give up. remember OC'ing is a process not a 1 button magic solution (mostly).

Just came to say... goodluck. You guys lost me talking all technical and shit :) But usually with anything that i don't know google is your best frien.

I reapplied the past a couple of times just to make sure I was doing it right, the EVO 212 comes in today so I should be setting it up tonight after work. I did OC my last CPU and everything seemed to be ok.

I tested the temps again yesterda with the FX 8320 without OC and running Civ 5 for a couple of hours the temp was at mid to high 60s; so maybe it's back to working. I still suspect I'll get better performance with the EVO 212.

I also think that I have a fan that's messed up, when I turn the machine on it's around 500rpm... and takes a while to speed up. I'm gonna double check fan settings too.

Thanks for the support!

60s are completely acceptable. you dont have to worry about breaking anything until you hit 90s, so if your staying below 80 under high stress your fine.

Well installed the EVO 212 and it is working like a charm! Looks like my old cooler was just not up to it, but the 212 with a couple of fans is a beast.

Case closed.
