The Best Girlfriend He Never Had

This is just surreal.

Apparently, Manti Te'o, a Notre Dame linebacker who was in the running for the Hiseman trophy, lost his grandmother and girlfriend the same day. The girlfriend died of leukemia.

Except she didn't, because apparently the girlfriend never actually existed. She and Te'o had only ever met online. After she "died," reporters tried to track down her family and discovered that there was no record of her anywhere. The picture on her account turned out to be some one alive that was completely disconnected from the whole thing.

But wait, there's more. Te'o's dad had mentioned in interviews that he knew of several time that his son and the girlfriend had met. Te'o had said that he met the girl in person after a game, and one of his friends said that he knew her from before she started the relationship with Te'o.

And now apparently, the Twitter account that she used is active again and said that all would be revealed at noon today (Jan 17). WT to the F.

I have no idea what's going on here, but I want the movie rights.

Dude. I was listening to this on the radio this morning. They went through the events of how they "met" and everything and after the whole thing one of the radio people goes "I'm sorry wait a sec. This guy was dating this girl for 2 years and was ok never spending time with her, or having sex, or..oh wait going to visit her when she was DYING IN THE HOSPITAL?"

There are tons of rumors and wild claims going around that the whole thing has been fabricated either by Manti Te'o or his manager (or w/e it's called since he's not pro currently) or that it was a cover up for his male partner from Arizona since he's Mormon and they can't have that sort of relationship.

Personally I'm not sure why he would make up such an outrageous story if it wasn't real. But then who is this chick and was she just "Catfishing" (new term I learned today...yay?) and was her "dying" a way to get out of the whole thing or was that a ploy too or...so confused. Definitely a WT to the F *ponyerr:

Pretending to be some one you are not on the internet. There is a documentary show about it called "Catfish." I think it was coined very recently.

It's making an online persona for the intent of pursuing an online relationship (usually they do it to get money out of people or what have you). At least that's what they were describing it as on the radio. It looks like the money thing doesn't have to come into it from the online definitions but I would assume that happens more often than not.

I think this story is going to co-opt the term and push it into mainstream. My inner English language nerd is squeeing at seeing the birth of a new term in real time.*octo2*

I feel that happens quite a bit though no? Or do you think this will be more main stream than other terms that have popped up recently?

Huh. Interesting story non-the-less. I'll definitely enjoy hearing the rest of it later.

I think it is something that will now be considered a part of the vocabulary, and get there quicker as a result of this story.

During the Bush/Kerry election, the term "swiftboating" was coined, and has been used since to describe blind-sided political attacks. So yes, it happens with fair regularity. I find the evolution of language fascinating. Consider the how the meaning of the words hot, cool, and gay have changed in the last 50 years.

My nerdiness aside, this situation is just crazy. Personally, I think he was duped, but I also think he embellished the story to make it better by falsly claiming to have met her. I'd like to believe he didn't make the whole thing up entirely, but that's a possibilty too.

This is made even funnier by the contrast of the very real girlfriend of Alabama's Quarterback. When did sports become about the players off-field relationships? (I'm gunna go ahead and blame Tony Romo and Jessica Simpson).

Welcome to 1999 again with online hoaxes :) Wonder if he sent "it" money... And the real question, WHY IS THIS OK and why are they not investigating the asshole who did it?

They are investigating, but trolling is not illegal. No identity was stolen, no money was defrauded. I don't think there is a crime here.

You don't actually want that. Can you imagine how much bs it would be to run a forum like this if you had to verify everyone's identity?

For a real insight to this kind of thing go watch the movie Catfish. The guy who is the victim lets his brother and his friend film a documentary on the whole thing and they go to track down the "woman" he is having an online relationship with. The movie got so much acclaim that mtv started a show with them where they track down other people's "catfish" for them and film it like a reality show.

I heard about this show on my morning radio show. They were talking about how a pretty hot girl was tricking a somewhat nerdy guy into thinking he REALLY had a shot with her. She drove up IRL, told him he never really had a shot, and left. He was left devastated or some shit.

Wow. What kind of terrible person does that? :|

That's not even the worst type of episode. One episode there is a girl who had a facebook relationship with a guy who lived 15 minutes away. It turns out that he was fake and the profile and all its friends were another chick that was just trying to get the first girl to stay away from her boyfriend and fuck with the first girl.
