Speakers vs. Headset

So I see a lot of people here are into using headsets. I only ever bought cheap sets for use with vent, etc...

Whats the pros and cons of using a good pair of headphones vs a good 2.1 speaker system. Sound card already included in the mix.

Headsets are louder but quite and no feedback. Speakers are good until somebody is in the next room over sleeping.

I prefer using speakers, but since we're primarily on mumble while playing, a headset is a must.

I agree with this. Speakers are nice but no one wants you causing anyone else to go deaf from your loud ass speakers/feedback.

So it sounds like its all about voice chat then.

It's about as close as you can be to the guild. No one's forced to hang out in mumble all the time but I think there will be a lot of us that are on mumble if we're in game. I know I will be.

There is a lot of people on mumble right now. It doesn't matter when you read this post. Go check, I dare you.

If you just game, and dont play loud music all over your house, just get the headset. I dont want to hear feedback on mics :*(

If you have a TV close to you, like me. It doesn't really matter if you're using speakers or a headset.. Of course my mic picks up almost about anything in my room so...

Says the guy that positioned his mic over the top of his computer exhaust fans.-bruceno-

But yeah, it all comes down to feedback.. If you're on mumble and talking with other people, it's really easy to tell who has a headset w/mic, and who is running speakers and standalone mic.

Yea I guess I sounded like a robot until I got a headset :p We have two desks in our room and mine is right next to the a/c and the tv so I needed one bad lol. I also like that I will be able to play late at night without waking up the hubs.

Headsets [a nice pair] will give you a far better read-out of the environment. Having a 5.1 or 7.1 set, combined with a little sound tweaking will give you a very accurate sound field while gaming. This gives you quite an advantage for knowing exactly where objects/people/events are in reference to you.

A really quality pair headset matched with a quality pre-amp or soundcard or both can be a very rich and vibrant sound stage. One that cannot be beat by speakers due to it closing outside noise out. And still being able to blast it. But if you live alone, nothing can beat a full 5.1 suorround sound setup with speakers for a good movie.

Depends on your use.

Also headset is a must for voice chat.

I'm no audiophile, so a headset works just fine for my chat and sound needs. The only downside is if you're trying to watch a movie or listen to music with other people, as a headset obviously isn't very good for broadcasting sound for multiple people to hear.

I think it really depends on what you're doing like people mentioned before. I like a headset for chat and late night gaming where I don't want to wake anyone up. But for movies and some games with background music like a city builder game it's nice to have it playing and not having to have a headset on.

Now now now now, I don't use a headset. so long as you know how to rig your system you can use desk mic and speakers no prob. If you're not into all that tweaking though i've found that headset mic's often get feedback from your headphones anyway. When on a pc that I haven't "tuned" I use a desk mic and a pair of headphones.

You're one of the people I hear myself talking on (feedback) ;) *ducks and runs*

Sometimes it's hard to hear what you're saying as well. Definitely not as clear as it could be but it's not super mega annoying or anything, just means repeating yourself sometimes. *crabs*
