Just sharing... Kaiju's Sketchbook.

I've decided I'll start a sketchbook. I have currently started my final project for the school year, we get to make a game over 20 weeks from start to finish and i figured I'll post progress shots as I go. We're going for a very cartoony aesthetic with hand painted textures.

This is the start of a house and house related assets I am currently working on.

That is something I could NEVER do. I'm always impressed when people make something out of thin air, program enabled or not.

I use a similar software from Autodesk but more towards engineering work. I use Autocad. Its fun being able to make things from nothing. When first start it looks imposibble but after a while the pieces fall in together and looks great.

It's actually quite simple, once you learn all the basic controls. Out of all those menu options, I use maybe 6 or 7.

Yeah I am completely helpless in the creativity department lol. Good Luck with your project Kaiju.

Working on textures for the assests to the house. Such as stairs, window, balcony, etc.

Just blocking in colours for the stones at the moment, going to go into more detail a later.

Nice! The thing that gets me is unwrapping for UVs.. I always manage to eff it up, or not optimize it well.. It's a blast to see your own creation in gamespace though. Back while I was waiting for Warhammer Online to release, I was learning 3dsmax, and texturing... it took me like 3 weeks to build, map, and texture this simple Dwarven cannon tower model (without the damn cannon!):

I'm sure you could probably do it in a few hours.. I'm /jelly .. I would so love to do this stuff for a living. I really need to try it out again and try to learn.. too bad 3ds and maya are so expensive though.

With unwrapping you really need to take your time with it.

Texturing is quite simple if you're using photo textures, but I'm hand painting all of mine for this, so it'll take a bit of time.

As for your model it looks good, Do you have a wire frame render at all?

Sadly, I lost everything in the Great HDD Crash of '09.. all I have left are those few screens that I took. Maybe I'll play around with Blender, it seems to have come a long way in the last few years.

Have you tired importing some of your models into UDK or Unity and play around designing a level?

At my uni, we were working in groups of 5-6 people, each with group with programmers and artists to make a working prototype for our pitch to an industry panel.

And sadly my group got cut, so these items are no longer being worked on. But we did import all the models me and 3 other artists worked on into unity and made a working prototype.

REALLY! I am in my final year of a 4 year course and I study Computer Games Design, we focus on more 3D and Design positions with some programming thrown in and we have Team Project's were us and some programmers team up and have 1 study year to make a game, we have total control over the project. first 2 years we working in UDK importing assets and stuff, but found Unity easier on the programmers so our final year work was built in that.

What university are you studying at and how long into your course are you?

I'm studying at a place called AIE or Academy of Interactive Entertainment in South Melbourne Australia. I'm doing a 2 year course and I'm in my second year.

There is an optional 3rd year were you get 1 year to make a game and publish it and try and earn some actual money from it as well.

What kind of game will it be when it's finished?

The pictures of models and textures i posted earlier i am not currently working on, since i have moved into a new team.

In this new team we're currently working on an on rails shooter, similar to star fox. It's set in a semi futuristic city which is being taken over by aliens. It's pretty generic. But i'll get some screen shots of what I'm currently working on and post them.

Ah I see

I spent quite some coin on rail shooter's back then in the good arcade center times. Quite a long time since I played one. Are you passionate about this project or you know just try to get it over with?

I did some graphic design but I really didn't like drawing stuff for other people because of all the "let’s make that logo a bit bigger" demands of the customers and so on:)

This is one I'm actually fairly passionate about. It's out of my usual style of low poly, hand painted, highly stylized art assets.

We're going for a very gritty realistic texture style. Our uni managed to snag some keys for 2 programs by Quixel called dDO and nDo2, which we're currently messing about with.

Only problem now is that i have to work under some one who is specific and narcissistic about what they want. :(

I like the sound of that looking forward for some screens. Never heard of quixel and those programs before.

As to working under someone like that I get you:) it's hard to do a artistic/creative job and to please people (worse when your passionate about it and they are just like "nah change that -I like it this way-") and especially if they are narcissistic pricks.
