Building a PC for Guild Wars 2

Hey guys, so after the most recent BWE, I've decided I'm definitely going to have to invest in a new PC. I've had this one for a long time, constantly upgrading, or finding random parts through weird situations over the years, and up until now it's played any MMO worth playing, granted I had to crank em down a bit, but that never really bothered me. My current rig played PvE and sPvP acceptably, if not smoothly, but WvW was a disaster. Borderline unplayable. I'm pretty sure my processor is the bottleneck.

I'm on a modest budget. I'd really like to spend no more than $600 on my new rig... and I really want it before release lol. I have a case. I have 6GB of RAM. I need a better power supply, a new motherboard and processor, and a graphics card. Am I forgetting anything? I'll also need a new monitor, a headset, a gaming keyboard and mouse (not necessarily counted toward the budget). I'm just wondering if you guys have any recommendations for me to check out. I don't know which brands to avoid and which are trustworthy, and I'm not so familiar with what blahblah is compatible with this other blahblah, just need some guidance, lol. Gonna prowl around on Newegg until the podcast starts.

You wanna stay under 600 dollars and you need a PROCESSOR AND VIDEO CARD?????

Is that RAM DDR2 or DDR3? Because if it's DDR2 then you're going to need to buy new RAM also. Sorry bud but I just don't see you building a "new" PC with current gen parts with that budget. Now if you were ok with running older generation parts then you could find some pre-build deals on various websites (amazon, newegg, etc.)

Dude I know it can be done. :p I don't need to stream and I don't need to run the game on high graphics. I just wanna play. This computer cost $600 like 5 years ago and it still runs decently at low settings, it's just slightly framey in WvW.

I don't need to stream or take pretty screenshots I just want to play lol. Don't need bleeding edge stuff that will be half price in 3 months. The minimum sys req is Gefore7800GS FFS!

EDIT: Found this on a forum somewhere. http://pcpartpicker.com/p/b7fC

Hmm. I see. I was playing it on a laptop during the weekend on everything set to really low but it didn't look nice. I would want to play it at medium atleast. I'm not sure on how to build it for under $600, sorry buddy :(

If you need a new mobo, graphics card, and processor, your going to need new ram. Your also going to need a new case becuase your 5 yea rold case is gonna have the airflow of a coffin.

I was doing the same thing, had a budget of 2k. Didnt like the futureproofing of it since x79 just came out, so raised my budget to 2500.

600 bucks aint gonna cut it.

That's cool thanks anyways. I'll work it out. I'll probably end up spending way more anyways... even though I shouldn't. :p It will cut it. I know it will, I don't need the bleeding edge stuff. From the research I've done I'll be able to run at at least medium settings with no problem, and I'll probably be turning it down to low anyways because I really just don't care about flashy crap, I just wanna play the game. $2500 is not something I'd ever spend on a computer, and if you buy the same PC in 4 months it'll probably be like 2/3rds that price, and you still probably wont need anything like that to play any PC game on the market.

I don't stream, I don't video capture, I don't have crazy multitasking over 3 displays. I just run mumble and the game lol.

I already have a nice, clean server case I got from my work. We don't all have crazy amounts of money to throw at our hobby/addiction. :p

Hey not saying bleeding edge but I would go with an i7 of some sort and graphics cards that won't be outtdated for Guild Wars 2 are going to run you 200+

Where do you live, what retailers do you usually use? It is possible to make a PC for under $600 but trust me it won't last long. The technology will phase out earlier than more costly PCs.

I dunno, will probably order the parts online from Newegg or something, unless you guys have a better suggestions. Honestly, I'm not really concerned with how long it lasts, I generally just stick with an MMO for a while, and I already know I'm just gonna be play GW2 for years haha. Other games just don't have the same depth. Is $800 more viable? I really can't justify spending a grand on a new computer right now, at least not before launch. Maybe something with room for upgrades later?

$800 Is viable, ideal would be $900 - $1000. But I'm sure you can have a good PC for $800. I'm building a list at the moment on Newegg.

Awesome, thanks man.

My friend said he might sell me his which ran him $1500 maybe 4 or 5 months ago. It'd be cool, but I'm simultaneously trying to convince him to sell it to me and to keep it so he can play GW2 when it comes out haha.

If it's really going to make a huge difference I'd spend $1000 maybe, but it'd require not spending all my money on partying and stupid shit in days, which I'm bad at. :p

Get the specs, a good graphics card is around $200. A budget graphics card is around $135.

By the way are you going to try to overclock or anything?

I dunno.. if it's a good idea I can. I don't mind spending some time learning about it. Is it fairly easy? Are there tools to make sure I'm doing it right? :p

It's better to leave it alone as it shortens your PCs life, it's only for those who want to get high benchmarks and want the most out of their CPU by sacrificing its lifespan. Also not overclocking saves you around $10 as you won't be getting a K version of the Intel processor.

I have the list ready, it's annoying copy-pasta-ing all of the cart, if you PM me your e-mail I can send it to there.

This computer my fiance is going to build me added up to $815. Its ideal for this sort of game. Very good specs too ( im not certain of them cause im bad at computers buttttttt..) Im not getting it till after september unless my current desktop explodes. All parts from Newegg.. plus if we have to buy it soon no payment for a year i believe!

Their credit card i think... something my fiance told me about, pretty sure thats what it is.

EDIT: actually its if you buy a prebuilt one i think. Im not certain though, i think theres like a 6 month no interest though for things over a certain price..

I am still modifying the list to get the best performance for the price. I just gave you an more up to date build that comes with Z77 Chipset with an Ivybridge CPU and PCI 3.0 GPU. I'm thinking of dropping the PCI 3.0 and putting in a 6870/6850 or 560 based on your budget and maybe putting in Sandy Bridge or keeping Ivybridge. Stay tuned for some updates, I'll get back to you tomorrow.
